Who I am.
I’m a third-year PhD student at Michigan State University studying technical communication.
I came to Lansing in the fall of 2022 to begin a PhD in Writing and Rhetoric. Prior to this, I earned a Master’s Degree in Composition and Rhetoric at Miami University, where I also studied Professional Writing as an undergraduate student.
My academic interests lie in technical communication, user experience, and digital writing. While I’m not quite ready to write a dissertation just yet, I currently study how technical communication and digital spaces are embodied by users, and how users tactically resist instructions, limitations, and other restrictions imposed on them by apps and other systems. You can read about some of these intersections in this proceedings paper that I coauthored with Professor Adam Strantz in 2023.
As a graduate student, I’m currently employed as a writing consultant in MSU’s Writing Center. Prior to this, I taught WRA 101/Writing as Inquiry, where I taught incoming students how to write for a variety of collegiate and professional contexts. My pedagogy revolves around multimodal writing, remix, and rhetorical awareness so that my students are prepared to approach any situation in college (and beyond) with critical thinking skills and the ability to address any number of writing and design challenges.
